About Downtown Fort Lauderdale
Florida became part of the United States in 1821 and by 1830, the “New River Settlement” (which is present day Fort Lauderdale) had over 70 residents. Fort Lauderdale was officially incorporated in 1911 and because the county seat of the new Broward County establishment and by 1925, census recorded 5,625 residents. Since that time, Fort Lauderdale has boomed to become one of the most popular and frequented tourist destination. In 1945, an unnamed category 4 hurricane decimated the area, but could not stop the unprecedented growth of this beloved area of Florida.
Fort Lauderdale has become popular enough that a number of films have been filmed here, including Where The Boys Are, There’s Something About Mary, True Lies, Flight of the Navigator, and Caddyshack. Arts and entertainment have been at the forefront of Downtown Fort Lauderdale since a bond was issued to connect the city’s Arts district to the historic downtown areas.
